With the weather being extremely warm and pleasant in February, many people are looking forward to spring. Having the chance to spend more time outside, enjoying fresh air and hopefully not having to worry about wind and rain is exactly what people are looking for. If you are able to spend time in your garden in the next few weeks, it is likely you will have to make some improvements to enhance your pleasure and enjoyment. Summer is the season where you are most likely to spend the most time in your garden, so it makes sense to take care of business in spring. If you have trees in your garden, this is the ideal time of year to ensure that they are in good condition. On the outside and to the untrained eye, trees can look in excellent condition, but this isn’t always the case. It is always best to call on an expert to provide you with guidance and tips on managing the trees in your property but there are some steps you can carry out yourself.

Look out for the leaves

If you are going to review the condition of the trees located in your garden, one of the things you should look for is the colour of their leaves. If the leaves are green, this is a positive sign because green leaves provide oxygen for trees. However, if in spring, leaves are yellow or brown, it may be a worrying sign. This sometimes suggests that your tree is dying or dead, and it is an indicator that you should get in touch with an expert.

Mulch is important at this time

One activity you should commit to in spring is laying some mulch at the base of your tree. Mulch plays a strong role in retaining moisture and it plays a role in killing or preventing weeds. This is something that all gardens can benefit from and if you have relatively young trees, this is a helping hand that makes a big difference.

If you plan on laying mulch against your tree be sure to lay it at the foot of the trunk and not higher up. This should be avoided because mulch higher up a tree trunk can lead to fungal growth. Consider pruning your trees

This is another activity that some people will prefer to leave to the experts but if you are confident and you have the right equipment, it is something you may wish to consider. Removing damaged, broken or even dead branches will encourage further growth and development in your tree, which is something that all gardens can benefit from.

Spring is always a sensible time to water your trees. Depending on how harsh the winter was for you, the ground around your tree may have become frozen, preventing water from being absorbed into the soil. Therefore, when the weather improves, take the time to ensure your tree and the soil is properly hydrated.
